Understanding language is important for children’s learning.  But it also helps a child know what is going on and what is happening next.  Play is easier if a child can easily understand what the other children are saying, and this makes social problems less likely.  Also, one of the most common causes for children not doing as they are asked is that they did not understand.

Fortunately, there are lots of things we can do to help children with developing understanding of language.

First of all, check that the Words Up key messages are all in place as much as possible
